Sur un moteur diesel, les bougies de préchauffage servent à préchauffer les chambres de combustion de chaque cylindre avant et pendant le démarrage.
Lorsque les bougies sont fatiguées, cela provoque un démarrage difficile et lorsque celles-ci tombent en panne, le démarrage devient impossible.
La bougie d'allumage est un dispositif électrique présent sur les moteurs à allumage commandé provoquant l'inflammation du mélange gazeux dans la chambre de combustion.
